The System.map issue isn't usually a big deal. At least not in terms
of making it as far as having a functional system. Apparently your
System.map file wasn't generated with the kernel you are using.

The root partition is probably mounted read-only. Have you tried doing
something like

mount -t ext2 -o remount,rw /dev/??? /

before attempting to change the password?
