As I already pointed out, blanking is ultimately desired.

OK, I tried switching to Xpmac by flipping the symlink in
/etc/X11 -- no luck: the screen goes blank and all I get is a
cursor in the upper-left corner.

OK, I grabbed all the RPMs from the CS 1.2 release, but,
according to the rpm command, I get a dependency complaint:
/etc/services is needed by linuxconf-1.17r2-5
That seems odd to me since /etc/services is a file and not
a package. Any ideas?
