You are certain that gmix gave you a message stating that it couldn't
find a kernel with sound support? I am certain that sound worked on my
PowerBook with the stock stuff from CS 1.1. kmix didn't work, however
gmix did. Since there don't appear to be any sound modules with that
distro, it seems like it must have been in the kernel. Unless I just
picked up modules somewhere else and forgot about it. Or maybe not all
of the CS 1.1 CD's were exactly the same? I seem to recall there were
at least two versions.

I never tested with external speakers. Sorry I can't be of more help
but I abandoned all the 2.2.6 stuff quite a while ago.
