Yes, I'm running it as root.

Not that I can see:
kernel: PPP: version 2.3.7 (demand dialing)
kernel: PPP line discipline registered.
kernel: registered device ppp0
pppd: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0
pppd: Using interface ppp0
pppd: local IP address 205.149.180.188
pppd: remote IP address 204.156.128.1
then nothing.
The strace on pppd shows that it hangs on:
_newselect(0x6, ...)
where file descriptor 6 is /dev/pts/3 that it opened earlier,
presumeably the tty device it needs to operate.
