The font server was also installed and running for me. I'm a newbie with
Linux and wasn't sure what to do. A friend that does know more (full time
user) helped with adding FontPaths to the XF86Config file, which also did
not work. So being a newbie that I am and knowing how to do only one thing
well with Linux, "Install" :) (I know it is the hard way and really don't
learn anything by doing it) Well this is what I did to solve the problem:
Plus I don't recommend this because of the time it takes and there has got
to be a better solution. This is only for the humor of the readers.

1. Knowing that I could get ydl-cs1.1 to work:
2. Reinstalled a clean basic system (default selections) of ydl-cs1.1
including deleting and remaking the partitions.
3. Did an Upgrade with ydl-cs1.2 (not Install) and chose the individual
packages to install
(side note: lol not knowing correctly what is normally installed I ended
up putting up to 300mb extra onto the HDD)
4. X would start but wasn't correct resolutions etc.
5. Ran Xconfigurator, let it do it's thing by default, and X worked fine
after that, that's only having used it a day. So no telling what doesn't
work because of the backwards way of installing.

The only other thing that I can think of is that you are missing some
fonts, relative to what the font server expects to find. Or a font
directory has become corrupted. You might try reinstalling your font
server and font packages.
