        Although I've (re)gotten PPP to work on my PowerBook (Lombard),
        I've never gotten the modem to emit any sound during the
        connection phase. According to the AT command set, this modem
        init string:

                AT&C1E1%E2M1L2Q0S0=0V1X4

        that contains M1L2 should turn the modem speaker on until a
        CONNECT (M1) and set the volume level to maximum (L2); yet, the
        modem is silent. (The speaker works in other cases (beeps).

        Any ideas on how to get the modem speaker on?
