I've got a PowerBase 200, which I think uses the same or similar
motherboard as the 5500/6500. It also has a built in ATI Rage II video
setup, which came with 2mb memory and which I expanded to 4mb. I can
get 1152x870x16 at 75 Hz in MacOS. I can also get 1280x960x8 at 75Hz or
1280x1024x8 at 60 Hz, neither of which are very exciting to me.
However, I have set up XFree86 to get 1280x960x16, which is great on my
Apple 21" monitor. If you want details let me know. From my
/var/log/dmesg file:

MacOS display is /bandit/ATY,mach64_3D_pc
atyfb: 3D RAGE (GT) [0x4754 rev 0x41] 4M EDO, 14.31818 MHz XTAL, 170 MHz
PLL, 63 Mhz MCLK
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 160x60
fb0: ATY Mach64 frame buffer device on /bandit/ATY,mach64_3D_pc

I get 133 BogoMIPS with my 200MHz 603e on a 40MHz bus - your 225MHz 603e
on a 5MHz bus should be more than that.

Here are the relevant sound items from /var/log/dmesg:

Sound initialization started
Sound initialization complete
DMA sound driver installed, using 4 buffers of 32k.
