Well, I can't say much about the X problems without seeing your XF86Config
file, but I can suggest that in the future, when you do an install, set
aside
a large partition (exact size would depend on what you need and have
available) and put every program that you compile or download in that
partition. That way, if for some reason you have to re-install, you can
simply re-format and re-install on your other partitions, while leaving
that
one untouched. It makes re-installing much easier and much less time
consuming. (Note: traditionally, and according to the LSB, this partition
should be called /usr/local. RedHat advises against this, though, so you
may
want to create another location for it.)

P.S. I didn't know anyone made SMP boards for the G3- I guess that shows
you what kind of a Mac fanatic I am :)
P.P.S. If you want to post your XF86Config, I might be able to help
with the X problem, but then again my laptop is misfiring on what sounds
like the exact same error message, so I might not be of too much help.
P.P.P.S. On a final re-reading of your note, I'd strongly suggest against
getting desperate and doing a complete re-install- that's never the best
solution. If you must re-install, just grab the X rpms from the yellowdog
site and re-install those before doing something completely drastic.
