I'd suggest looking at

There is a *lot* there to read, but there are also a lot of script
kiddies out there who can do very serious damage to your system if you
are not careful. Furthermore, they can use your system to launch attacks
on others- for which you may be legally liable. The various pages within
that site are unfortunately either very cheesy or very technical, but
they are at least a start. Hopefully others here can suggest better.
