My understanding was that it didn't matter where you put BootX or the
system folder because BootX just loads the kernel into memory (or is it a
ramdisk???) and then has the computer continue booting off of your linux
partition.

The reason HFS is recommended is that, AFAIK, linux cannot read to or write
from an HFS+ partition from within linux. This would include preventing
installers from reading the rpms from an HFS+ partition.
