thanks Patrik. however, a friend at work [curiously enough, his name is
Patrick] suggested passing the word "single" as the only kernel argument in
BootX. this dropped me into single user mode with the disks in a read/write
state, and i was able to edit the password in emacs, not vi [thank god].
i'm surprised this isn't more commonly used, since it's so much simpler.
