do 'man sndvolmix' and play around with settings
if you are not hearing anything while playing a cd in the X environ,
and you open a terminal window, type sndvolmix 15
that _should_ turn your speaker vol to full.
to use headphones, you need to do sndvolmix -h 15
i don't know if the iMac reacts differently, but that works just
fine on my 8500 install.
