Well a similar thing (kernel panic galore) happened to me when I put
an IBM DTTA-351680 into the empty space for the Zip drive on my B&W
G3 (works like a charm by the way, never hotter than 35 degrees
Celsius).

When I switched to the 2.2.12 kernel found at
http://www.students.uiuc.edu/~atong/aty128/ however, everything
worked fine again. (The experimental 2.2.12 kernel found in the
'kernels' dir on the ydl ftp-site doesn't boot my machine at all).

The 'only' problem is, the keyboard map changes for USB keyboards
from 2.2.7 to 2.2.12 kernels. With the newer kernel, the maps in
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/mac have to be used instead of
/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/usb. Took me quite a while for the Swiss German
keyboard to figure out a suitable keymap and especially the
corresponding .Xmodmap.

If there is interest for the result, I'll post it on my website at
http://www.cyberlink.ch/~hochstra/ydl-g3 as soon as I'll have time.

Cheers
