Recently another possibility arose to accelerate X on a B&W G3, no
need to fiddle with the kernel or with video modes: A special Xpmac
version which can be found on
http://khendricks.ivey.uwo.ca/rage128_usb/ does the trick very well
(since I am using it...). To use it you must check 'No Video Driver'
in BootX. Works very smoothly.
I found the link on Neil Jolly's excelllent XFree86 page
http://www.members.home.net/njolly/xfree86/, which also contains
directions how to use this Xpmac version. Seems to be worth the
trip...
