Sounds like something, possibly your /etc/XF86Config got corrupted during
your original crash.

Jim: First make sure that the kernel you're using supports your video card.
Second make certain you're giving the correct kernel arguments for your video
card from bootx. I don't know what your system is, but on my beige G3 with an
ati rage pro I use the following argument "video=atyfb:vmode:12,cmode:32"
(without the quotes!). This is a crucial step in getting Xconfigurator, or
Xautoconfig, to work correctly. Boot with the correct argument for video, and
add single to the argument to get to a command line, rerun Xconfigurator &
make sure that it correctly identifies the amount of video ram your card has.
setup Xconfigurator for your monitor, and desired screen depth, choose to
skip testing X and save your Xconfigurator settings. Next test X from a
command line with "startx&". If all went well you can change your
/etc/inittab to boot into runlevel 5 if desired. If that fails you can try
running Xautoconfig instead of Xconfigurator. If you have anymore trouble
please reply in detail with you system configuration, video card type &
memory, error messages from startx etc.

I'll be away all weekend, but may be able to check in periodically for mail.
