hi,

i'm new to linux -- i've ordered some books but they haven't come yet. in the
mean time, i need to set a couple of environemnt variables -- PATH for one to
include some extra information. i know how to do this from inside a shell, but
i don't know how to make the change permanent. there must be a startup script
of some kind that needs to be modified but i don't know where to look for it.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
