I seem to have the same problem with my PowerBook. I only tested with xmms,
but neither the volume buttons on the keyboard nor the slider in xmms had any
affect on the volume. Based on what I gleaned from a couple of the newsgroups,
this is a general PB problem under Linux; one message mentioned a patch
referenced somewhere in the LinuxPPC Fac-O-Matic, but a quick search didn't
turn anything up.
