ok, i tried this on a beige g3 tower (built in scsi) and a 9600/300 (built in) and the problems were the same.
then I wiped the internal on the 9600 and installed it there - i'm almost finished the install, so i guess it worked - it must be related to the external.
once i get things up and running could i copy everything back over to the external from within linux and use it to boot like i wanted to in the first place?
