The BootX documentation states that it only works with uncompressed
kernels. I am assuming I create these with "make vmlinux" as opposed to the
"make zImage" I am used to. Problem is, as I said before, YDL doesn't boot
with the new kernel. It hangs at "Booting..."

any ideas?

as far as ppp, minicom connects, I exit without reset, and start pppd.
the process starts, everything is dandy for the exception that there is no
ppp0 up and running.

I've tried just about everything I could think of to bring it up, no go.
