Subject: missing mingetty tty1

I just noticed something quite strange... I had been logged into tty1,
logged out and never got a login prompt again. Those for the other tty's
work fine, but tty1 just seems to "hang". I did a 'ps fax', and there
is a process '/sbin/mingetty tty1'. I even killed it and another one
immediately replaced it, still with no prompt on the actual tty. What's
going on here? Can I get it back without having to restart? This
happened once before, I think. Any ideas?
