According to the same experience with RedHat distribution (and YD is
based on RedHat), the installer asks for the "directory containing
the distribution". Then, I didn't type the full path to the RedHat
directory, but the path to the directory containing the RedHat
directory.

Assuming the YellowDog folder is the distribution, You should try
ftp://ftp.sourceforge.net/pub/yellowdog/champion-1.2/ppc/
(which actually contains "YellowDog"...)
