Chiming in late, didn't see original post..

I belive that the addtional temp space you need is roughly the size of the
install, so if you're installing 200 MB's of files, you need an addtional
200 MB's (or so, rpm's are compressed a bit) in /var for yup to play with.
This is becasue if you're doing a yup dist upgrade yup needs to grab all
the packages to a local device before it can install them, and I would
betcha that yup wants to grab the entire transaction set at once. For a
CD install I don't know why it would want to do that, as it has all the
data in a cd already, but it might be using /var a s a staging area or
something.

950 MB's is really not enough space for a usable linux install (fine for a
firewall, small web site, dns server, etcc. ONLY setup), you'll find
yourself running out of space a lot, you should try to find some addtional
drive space. Seeing as this is a clone, it should have SCSI, and a new
SCSI 4 gig disk shouldn't be a whole lot, plus it will give you the
freedom to not have to worry about space issues.

<standard answer>
If there's a local Mac or Linux users group in your area, try contacting
them, as it's always possible (if not probable) that someone has exaclty
what you need and is willing to give it to you for very little money.
Plus, you'll be finding another source to answer questiosn that might not
be YDL related.
