pop is normally a standalone service. It comes bundeled with the UW IMAP
server (imap-2000), Cyrus and others, you can also get qpopper a pop only
server from Qualcomm. See list archives for many many lenghty discussions
about which is best. IMHO - UW is a standard and comes with YDL by
default so stick with it unless you specficly need the features of
another server, that way you'll get updates and will have less version
clash at upgrade time.

/sbin/chkconfig --list should tell you if it's on. (you may need to
restart xinetd if you changed the config)

Check logs in /var/log/messages to look for errors.

If you're telling Eudora to use SSL armored conenctions, the pop3s service
must be able to find the PEM key (again, check logs, you'll see the
errors)
