I'm attempting to install octave-2.1.35 on YDL 2.0, which requires readline
library version 4.1. The yup rpm has version 4.1, so I installed readline
4.2 in /usr/local and set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include /usr/local/lib at
front.

The install of readline-4.2 gave the message "may need to run ldconfig.",
which seems to be confirmed by the fact that the octave configure script
does not find the newly-installed readline library unless I manually set
it's internal search path.

I'm out of my element trying to understand what do do here. There is no
ldconfig man page installed, and the documentation from ldconfig -help
doesn't seem to match the ldconfig man pages I find on the web.

Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

[For those who don't know: octave serves as a decent replacement for MATLAB
in many situations, although it's not 100% MATLAB compatible.]
