Do we still have the "shutdown" combo? When I installed YellowDog I
turned to do my usual "shutdown -r now" and all I got was a "command not
found" error. I didn't really look for it, instead just issued "reboot",
so it might just not be in my path.

To answer the original poster's question, there are many things you
can do before hard-rebooting your box. Whatever you do please try to
avoid a hard reboot, since the unclean unmounting of drives could really
hurt any unix system. First you could access another virtual console and
see what's going on. Are you familiar with virtual consoles? Type, in
the order given, opt-ctrl-functionkey-x, where x is any number from 1 to
6 (is that right anyone?) and you'll be taken to a nw and fresh login
prompt. From there you can login and if rebooting is what you want you
can issue some of the commands already given by our friends on the list,
al of them will bring your entire system down in a clean manner
regardless of what's going. If you want to KNOW what IS going on with
KDE you can start by digging into /var to see if you find anything
interesting there. Or you could issue "ps -aux" and see what are the
running process. If you have a hunch about which one is freezing your X
session then just go ahead and kill it, login should be automatically
back on it's knees for you when the problem is corrected.

So, take your time and dig a bit into your system, it will
appreciate it much more than a hard reboot. Don't hesitate to write if
any doubt comes to mind.

        Yours,...

                Juan.
