This seems a bit extreme - the worst I've had in a long while is simply
having to drop to single user mode and run fsck manually as described on
the screen when it is required. This fixed everything fine for me - I've
certainly never had to reinstall anything because of an unclean
shutdown, and my machine does it annoyingly often with flaky Powerbook
"sleep" support.
