Wow, after so much hassle, I finally installed XFree86-4.0, and then got
X working again:
I had to update my kernel, and I used the one from
http://ppclinux.apple.com/~benh/
Of course, there are no instructions at that site on how to proceed, so
I "faked" it by using some very thorough instructions for _compiling_ a
kernel & just did the last few steps.
It looks very nice, but I do have one error message at boot,
regarding dmasound and it not loading properly.
