Right, you're not running accelerated. All monitors look good with
fbdev :-) To my knowledge, atyfb is not a valid driver for X,
although it -is- valid for console mode, as it is a valid argument
passed through BootX, for example.

Indeed, your XFree86.0.log makes no mention of an atyfb ever being
loaded, and of course not the ati driver, and there is this further
evidence:

(II) FBDev: driver for framebuffer: fbdev, afb
(II) Loading sub module "fbdevhw"
(II) LoadModule: "fbdevhw"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libfbdevhw.a
(II) Module fbdevhw: vendor="The XFree86 Project"
        compiled for 4.1.0, module version = 0.0.2
        ABI class: XFree86 Video Driver, version 0.4
(II) FBDev(0): using default device
(II) Running in FRAMEBUFFER Mode
(**) FBDev(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32
(==) FBDev(0): RGB weight 888
(==) FBDev(0): Default visual is TrueColor
(==) FBDev(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0)
(II) FBDev(0): Hardware: ATY Mach64 (vidmem: 6140k)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Of course, your video is very useable I'm sure. I just would have
been very surprised to see accelerated ati with XFree4.x without
artifacts. Don't know whether to be happy or sad that my suspicion
was confirmed...
