Oh! Looking at the log, I would suspect that the font server, xfs, has
crashed. I'm not sure why but you could try restarting it with
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start. Check the system log /var/log/messages for
further clues.

A number of font paths are listed at the start of the X config file. It is
worth checking that these all exist.
