I can't speak to the DDC stuff, however, at some point, Xconfigurator should
go into a test more, whereby the screen should flash while it tries different
refresh rates to see what the monitor/card are capable of - if it is not
doing this, then something is wrong.

Mine is running at 85 khz refresh rate now - it choose this as the highest
setting allowed by the card/monitor combination (the monitor being the
limiting factor in this case.
