You can get gtk+-devel off of your YDL CS 1.2.x CD in the yellowdog/RPMS
directory. I'm not sure why iconifying a window would kill X, perhaps
save the output of X to a file when you start:
startx &>xoutput.txt
Then look at that after it crashes... It should be able to tell you
something.
