Well, it's actually ATI Nexus 128 (extra memory is the only
difference, I think). I tried to install XFree 4.0.1 because the
acceleration for it under XFree 3.3.6 sucks (but at least XF3.3.6 does
work). I have previously done so successfully under LinuxPPC 200 on my
old platinum G3 (with the same card); so I downloaded the latest XFree
4.0.1 sources, patched them as per instructions at
http://penguinppc.org/usr/xf4/index.php3 , built the binaries, copied
and modified (for different monitor characteristics and card bus ID) my
old working XF86Config (from the platinum G3)... and nothing.

When I type "startx", the screen goes blank, and the system
stops responding to any and all console interactions. I can still log in
remotely, but killing X doesn't help -- I wasn't able to bring the text
terminal back up (switching to another virtual terminal doesn't work
either).

X just sits there, doing nothing but logging a single error over
and over:

(EE) r128(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...

I truly have no idea about what's going on. Can anyone toss any
suggestions my way? The relevant files can be found at:

http://www.cs.umass.edu/~danilche/XF4.0.1_YDL1.2.1/XFree86.0.log

I am booting the 2.2.17 kernel via yaboot, with
"video=aty128fb:vmode:20:cmode:24" flag.
