ok, i was practically wrestling with my (grey) power mac g4
during most of last week, so i think it's in order to squeal
for help on a list now.

the original problem was the nvidia geforce2 mx graphics
card. i was installing ydl 2.0 which went very smoothly
except for X which they never claimed would support my
card in th efirst place, so i spent a lot of time trying to locate
and compile drivers.

until i realized they claim ydl 2.1 does support my card,
so i downloaded that distribution, wiped my disk and started over.

now fair enough, i get 16bpp in X with no hassle, _except_
the whole screen is shifted to the left by 2 inches. note that this
was the case from the very beginning, even before i ever ran
X, hell, even through installation (but i didn't take it
seriously then.) I take it it must still be the graphics card,
as it seems unlikely you are all happily discussing dvds while staring
at 2in of black and groping for icons off the left of your screen :)

an old posting i found somewhere
(
'http://groups.google.com/groups?q=linux+install+text+shifted&hl=en&rnum=4&selm=55519111.0106152141.69a0b0c6%40posting.google.com'
)
mentions recompiling the kernel with different "Console drivers"
but it's not my precise context & i wouldn't know what i'm doing...

so anyway, i am just too brainfried to care by now. i'll just
sit back and wait for someone to walk up to me with a solution,
thankyou.
