Yes, you need to have some activity in the mount point for the automounter
to know to mount the device :) Also, after some time of idle activity
(setable in the config file) , it will unmount the device. You don't need
to cd in to the direcorty its self, just make a symbolic link to the mount
point and cd into that, you may need to change the permissions on the
mount point so that non-root users can access as well.
