Here is what solved the problem.
I had to ftp my /boot/vmlinux-2.2.17-0.6.1 file to a place where I could
access it from my mac. Then I downloaded it, renamed it vmlinux, and
replaced the old vmlinux at the root of my hard drive (where yaboot.conf
lives). After doing that, YDL booted into 1.2.1.
