Okay, so I set up the file /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-airport
as follows:

NAME=mercury
DEVICE=airport
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
ONBOOT=yes
USERCTL=no
IPADDR=
NETMASK=
GATEWAY=
DNS1=
DNS2=

And then I ran this command:

  iwconfig airport essid "my net" key "my key"

And got the following error:

  SIOCSIWESSID: No such device

Any more pointers will be most welcome.

BTW, once I get this figured out and working, I'd be glad to submit
detailed instructions to the list.

Regards,

David
