You don't "startx". startx is a script that, among other things,
sets DISPLAY to ":0", which means use the local console. You don't
have permission when you are remote, and when you're logged into the
console, you get what you saw.

In the telnet window, once you've "setenv DISPLAY
remote.mac.name:0.0", type the name of any X aware program (try
"xterm" or "xclock", for example). The window should show up on your
Mac. I once used a demo version of eXodus for a little while a long
time ago, and although I believe you can get it to use a remote
window manager, if I remember right it has one of its own that's
adequate.
