I've successfully compiled 2.2.12 using make zImage. Should that command
succeed, you will find a vmlinux file in /usr/src/linux (or wherever). I
don't know about boot errors, as I have just recompiled with a different
version and/or settings until it worked for me.

With the newer BootX, you can create a folder (as described in the
documentation) for all the vmlinux files. You can then rename them and
select them from a menu in the BootX screen. This is useful for switching
kernels faster than any other platform out there.
