You need to repartion your drive.

Create one partion for Mac OS that is smaller than the 9gb and leave
the rest as free space.

You will need to reinstall MacOS on this smaller partition.

I'm not sure how OS 9 does it, but with the Drive Setup that comes
with OS 8.x you boot off CD, launch drive setup, create one partition
and shrink the size down (leaving the rest as free space).

Then, from the YDL installer use pdisk (which they call fdisk) to
slice and dice the free space.

You're shrinking the HFS partition (which technically speaking is
getting rid of it and then making a new, smaller one- which is why
you'll need reinstall the Mac OS).
