Hi all,

I have to set up a database/web server and, of course, I want that
machine to be as fast as it possibly can be. The options would be: Dual
800 G4, running YDL 2.0, AMD Athlon 1.4, running RH 7.1 or a 8 processor
DEC Alpha machine (I don't have the exact specs on it, but I can get it
second hand, pretty cheap). The drives in either of the machines would
be UltraSCSI-160.
The question is: Which of the above configurations should I use. I know
the performance of the AMD machine but I'm uncertain of the performance
of a Dual-800 Mac. Will the G4 actually make much of a difference,
compared to the AMD in a database application? I fear, that the
bottleneck will be disk-I/O speed, not so much processor speed, but
then, motherboard design and such can make things faster here, too.
We are using PostGreSQL as the db server and Apache with PHP as the Web
server.

Comments welcome.

Best regards,
Chris
