Still cannot get it to work on a 6500 with an ATI Rage Pro card and
the on-board Rage II. I removed all trace of X (although I'm not too
sure how well I really did this) and installed the 401 rpms again. In
particular, I made sure of the following:

/etc/X11:
        X -> /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86
        XF86Config-4 exists and is readable

/usr/X11R6/bin:
        X -> XWrapper
        XFree86 exists and is executable

I have used Xautoconfig-0.12 to create both a single-monitor
XF86Config-4 and then tweaked it by hand for 2 cards/monitors until
all errors were removed. I double-checked the PCI device info and
made sure it was reflected correctly in the config file.

Thinking that it must be the driver, I got (thanks Neil!) the
ati_drv.o file from the xfree86 driver tree, while I'm waiting for my
28.8 modem to download the xf86 source overnight so I can build it
myself. Still no go.

In studying XFree86.0.log, everything looks good to me (no warnings
or errors) up to this point:

(II) LoadModule: "ati"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/ati_drv.o
(II) Module ati: vendor="The XFree86 Project"

         Module class: XFree86 XInput Driver
         ABI class: XFree86 XInput driver, version 0.1
(II) v4l driver for Video4Linux
(II) ATI: ATI driver (version 5.3.5) for chipsets: ati, ativga
(--) Chipset ATI Mach64 3D Rage Pro (BGA, PCI) found
(--) Chipset ATI Mach64 GT (PCI) found

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

Nothing I seem to do changes this. So, as requested, this is my
contribution to a report from people on older machines (non-Rage 128).
