I've spent some time looking into this recently. I think (!) that the
imstt driver only supports a limited range of video modes and that it only
works if you can also get console mode acceleration first. I have had 640
* 480 acceleration but it wasn't very good.

Since I have a cheap monitor, the range of video options I can try is
limited - with acceleration the imstt driver always seems to attempt to
drive the monitor outside its frequency range. People who have had success
seem to be using good multiscan monitors.
