9.1 is the last version supported on pre-G3 Macs; the 9.2 update won't install unless the Mac is capable of running OS X.

If you use UnsupportedUtlityX to run OS X on a pre-G3 Mac, you can install 9.2 as the Classic environment, but you cannot boot directly into it.
