No prefs file on the CD...probably need to run the installer for
that, and the installer wouldn't run.

I did this, and it worked.

Still have plenty of configuring, learning, and perhaps
package-finding to do, but getting a functional, no-weird-X-problems
Linux installed has been a big boost of confidence. Thanks for your
help (and expect further new-to-admining questions soon enough...)!
