To all:
I'd like to apologize for this flame, but I can't; I see so many
postings that have no thought whatsoever put into them. And this one
didn't even ask a question. This list is not for whining. Linux is a
great operating system, but it's not for beginners. If you can't
figure out how to manually unstuff a Stuffit .sea file, or can't get
bootx installed, or some of the other basic shit, you won't be happy
with Linux! You will be miserable!
Ask yourself:
As an installer, you become a technician. Are you a problem solver?
Are you fairly proficient in technical matters? Or do you usually
need professional help in this area? If so, you won't be happy here.
Do you own a good book on Red Hat Linux? If not, go buy one. Now.
Are aware of all the support resources on the web? Some of the
questions asked on this list are documented on the YDL
support/solutions page (Theoretically, the first place you would
look). This amazes me.
Have you tried to resolve your problem yourself, with a MORE than
reasonable amount of effort, using ALL the resources available to
you, following all the directions (to the letter)? And enjoying it?
You have to enjoy it! If it makes you miserable, you won't be happy
here.
The Unix/Linux guys here are a real resource for all of us. But I'm
sure they were hoping for more stimulating discussions, and to have
to answer the same newbie questions over and over, stuff that is
already somewhere in the support pages, is frustrating for them. You
can see it in some of the tongue- in- cheek answers. Use YOUR
resources first.
I'm all new to this. To me it's a challenge, like a game. I don't
want to look at the hint book. I've done 15+ successful installs and
worked thru the problems, and LEARNED a lot. And I ENJOYED it.
Everything I needed was available to me on the web, in the Linux book
I bought, or in older postings in this list.
Ok, end of rant. No Whiners! Thanks for listening. Geez, all I got
out of Eudora's flame rating system was 2 red chili peppers! Maybe I
should throw some swear words in.......
