Two additional things:
1. Instead of "startx" you could, as root, type "gdm" (gnome desktop manager) -
or you could just as well choose kdm or xdm - the only disadvantage being you'll
have to kill gdm (or kdm or xdm) to get back to the command prompt. The *dm
will give you a graphical login prompt where you can choose the window
manager/desktop environment you want to use.
OR
2. create a file /etc/sysconfig/desktop and put "GNOME" or "KDE" in it. (see
/etc/X11/xinit/Xclients to see why this works. ) Disclaimer: I haven't used this
one in a while, not sure if I forgot something.
