right click on XMMS and bring up the settings dialog - under "output".
 check back a few days in the list, someone else decribed how they set up 
their sound to not use artsd - although when I turn it off on x86, it causes 
LOTS of problems - also, check the forums at opensound.com

Thanks. I changed the output plugin on xmms to OSS [open sound system, being replaced by ALSA I understand, but what the hell].
Now xmms works AND uses less than 1% of the cpu, playing mp3's.
I wonder what is wrong with artsd?

Only other issue is that sound is coming out from my [PowerMac 9500's] internal speaker, not the soundcard output!?
