Subject: Sound recording on oldworld or newworld mac

Has anyone successfully recorded sound on either type of mac using YDL
2.1 via the sound input jack? I have an ANS 700 and a iMac 400 SE, but
on the ANS using the gnome sound recording software the resulting
recordings sound like terrible noise.
I can get sound through to the speakers that sounds very good, but can't
record it to disk.
Any ideas?
