This sounds like a config problem, not an installation issue. Unlike
Windows, Linux apps typically don't "self-destruct" requiring a
reinstall of the program files. Might want to look at Xconfigurator,
Xconfigurator4 and /etc/X config files. Make sure you know which
version of XFree you are using... 3 or 4. Different versions use
different config files.
