This will never change - if you read the cdrecord READMEs, you will find
that the instructions that CD writers accept are actually a form of SCSI
over IDE, so this is the only way that this will ever be supported.

The problem is that the distros need to catch up in what they set up as
their default configurations, and the ide-scsi module needs to be made
more user friendly.

If you don't have an ide-scsi.o file, you will have to build it. No way
around it.

I've just recently gone through this rigmarole on i386; haven't tried it
on a Mac. YMMV.
